Professor Stephen Clarke, OAM is a medical oncologist and translational cancer researcher based at the University of Sydney. Prof Clarke obtained his medical degree (MB BS) through the University of Sydney in 1983, he went on to complete a FRACP in Medical Oncology in 1990 at the Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. From 1991 – 1994 he worked in the Drug Development Unit of the Institute of Cancer Research/ Royal Marsden Cancer Hospital in Sutton, Surrey, UK. Later on, in 2012, Prof Clarke obtained a PhD in cancer pharmacology from the University of London and an MD from the University of Sydney.

On returning to Australia, he worked at a number of cancer centres before eventually returning to the Royal North Shore in 2010. Professor Clarke is a world renowned cancer pharmacologist and has been an invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and has over 200 publications in peer-reviewed journals.

Furthermore, in 2013 he was awarded the Eric Susman Prize of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians, which is awarded annually to a Fellow of the College for the most outstanding contribution to the knowledge of any branch of internal medicine. The prize is one of the College’s most prestigious and important awards, with the inaugural award made in 1962.

Research Interests

Prof Clarkes’ clinical research focuses on colorectal cancer (CRC), in particular the relationship between inflammation, impaired outcomes in CRC and malignant mesothelioma.

He has been involved in the assessment of predictors of outcome in patients with colorectal cancer and studies of cancer drug metabolism. Additionally, his laboratory made major findings in relation the impact of cancer associated inflammation on chemotherapy toxicity and survival.
